Beloved Big Bear Bald Eagle Jackie Recovering After Attack by Juvenile Eagles

Jackie, the well-known bald eagle from California’s popular Big Bear nest cam, is recovering after being rescued by wildlife experts following an attack that left her unable to fly.

The eagle was found grounded near Big Bear Lake on July 16 after reportedly being attacked several times by two juvenile bald eagles near Dana Point Park along the lake’s north shore. Wildlife specialists safely rescued Jackie two days later and transported her to the Ojai Raptor Center for treatment and evaluation.

Veterinary experts say Jackie did not suffer any broken bones or other major physical injuries. However, she remains under close observation while specialists conduct a full medical assessment to determine when she can safely return to the wild.

Jackie and her longtime mate, Shadow, have become internationally recognized through the live nest camera operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley, which has attracted millions of viewers following the pair’s nesting seasons since they first bonded in 2018.

The eagles have experienced both success and hardship over the years. In 2025, Jackie and Shadow successfully raised eaglets Sunny and Gizmo, although they also lost another chick during a severe storm. Earlier in 2026, two of their eggs were taken by ravens before they later began raising another pair of eaglets, Sandy and Luna.

Jackie’s temporary absence has left Shadow caring for the young eaglets alone. Footage from the live nest camera shows him continuing to feed, protect, and watch over the fledglings while defending the nesting territory.

The Ojai Raptor Center said Jackie is currently weak but receiving specialized veterinary care, including medical examinations and supportive treatment designed to aid her recovery.

Although officials initially stopped short of confirming the rescued eagle’s identity, Friends of Big Bear Valley later announced they were confident the injured bird was Jackie based on the available evidence.

The organization praised both eagles’ resilience, noting that Jackie has overcome previous challenges while expressing confidence that Shadow will continue caring for their young until she is able to return.

The rescue has also prompted the Ojai Raptor Center to appeal for public support. As a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation facility, the center relies largely on donations to provide specialized care, medication, nutrition, and rehabilitation for injured birds of prey.

Wildlife experts say Jackie is expected to remain under veterinary supervision for several more days while her condition continues to be monitored.

Why Bald Eagle Rehabilitation Matters

Wildlife rehabilitation centers play a vital role in conserving birds of prey by providing emergency medical treatment, rehabilitation, and safe release back into their natural habitats. As bald eagle populations continue to recover across North America, experts say public education, habitat protection, responsible wildlife viewing, and support for conservation organizations remain essential to ensuring these iconic raptors continue to thrive in the wild.
