She’s so fluffy and cute now.
When a family’s cat wouldn’t stop scratching around one area of the house, clearly interested in something, they decided to investigate — and found a tiny baby mouse, barely more than a day old. Unfortunately, the baby’s mother was no longer present, and the family knew that she wouldn’t survive without proper care.
They called the RSPCA, who came out to save the tiny mouse, which was barely the size of a coin — hence the name Penny. They entrusted her care to Pawz for Thought, who have extensive experience caring for mice. They were concerned at first because she was so young and didn’t have a mother to care for her. They initially placed her in an incubator and fed her goat’s milk on a tiny makeup brush all night.
They knew that finding another mouse to care for Penny would be her best chance. Fortunately, the rescue had a mouse who had recently given birth, so they decided to introduce her to Penny.
Trish Storey of Pawz for Thought told The Dodo, “It was really her only chance of survival.” “I took Penny and wrapped her in some of the litter’s nest material before placing four of the babies in the bedding with her.” I returned the nest material to the cage, and the mother immediately came to inspect. She returned her own babies to the nest one by one, until she finally took Penny.”
Everyone at the rescue was holding their breath, hoping the mama mouse would accept Penny as one of her own — which she thankfully did. As time passed, the mother treated Penny as she would her own children. Despite the fact that Penny was younger than her new adopted siblings, she thrived, and everyone was overjoyed.
“We didn’t bother her for over a week, but when we looked in, we saw Penny among the other babies,” Storey explained. “We’re much smaller, but we’re doing well.” The risk had been that the mother would reject her or that the older babies would push her out, but this had not happened.”
Nobody knew if Penny would survive when she was discovered. She is now doing extremely well thanks to her rescuers and her wonderful adoptive mama, who stepped up and provided her with all the love and care she required.
