I’ve always adored those ignored, abandoned, overgrown and “in-between” places:
The space between two houses where plants are growing over pieces of broken pottery. The city “drain” (which looks like a little green river) that’s covered in algae and moss. The space between park walls and the bushes planted against them. The inside of hollow trees. Little caves. The space under houses full of spiderwebs.
I was always the one saying, “What do you think is in/back there?” And everyone would reply, “I dunno. Who cares?”
Well, I still want to know what’s in there, every time. And my favorite fictional stories tend to be about people finally exploring the abandoned and secret places and finding strange things.
