Adopters are Turned off by The Dog’s Age and Health Difficulties, so it’s Hard to Find a Home for Him

AN ELDERLY DOG is having difficulty finding a home because rescuers are concerned that his age and health conditions will turn off potential adopters.

Kuzey, a 10-year-old Akita, arrived to the RSPCA’s Blackberry Farm Animal Centre in Buckinghamshire in October. Despite being regarded as a “lovely old guy,” he is still being forgotten more than six months later.

Kuzey has arthritis and requires medicine, which the charity fears is discouraging potential adopters.

“Kuzey is such a beautiful old chap but, at 10, his age is starting to catch up with him and he’s on long-term pain medication for arthritis, which will need to continue in his new home,” said Maisie Walker of the RSPCA branch.

“We are concerned that adopters may be turned off by this additional obligation since it will come at an additional cost at a time when families are truly feeling the squeeze.”

“We are keen to find Kuzey his forever home because he has been in our care for so long. At his age, he truly deserves a snug, warm retirement home where he will be lavished with affection.”

“We try our best, but nothing can replace his own magnificent house.”

Kuzey was very emaciated and had leg sores when he was rescued, but he is currently doing much better.

Despite his age and painful joints, he is quite energetic and enjoys playing with toys.

He likes taking moderate walks where he can smell around.

Kuzey might live with youngsters older than 12 years old.

He can be wary of other canines invading his personal space, thus he prefers to be the only pet in the house.

“Unfortunately, Kuzey is one in a long line of canines coming into our care with separation anxiety, having grown accustomed to having people around during lockdown,” Ms Walker continued.

“He’d like new owners who can devote a significant amount of time to assisting him in settling in before gradually exposing him to spending time alone.”

“He is such a lovely, caring young man with a lot of love to share.”

“Could someone just give him a chance?”
