“We were all in tears.”
Tanya Ohanian, canine director at Evanston Animal Shelter, assumed the dog found nearby in Cook County, Illinois, was just a neighborhood stray.
Ohanian had no idea that this dog had been stolen from her family and had spent the last five years attempting to find her way back home.
Staff at the shelter checked the puppy for a microchip, but the information they found wasn’t up to date. They suspected it was a dead end.
However, with the assistance of a local organization called Microchip Hunters, the shelter was able to receive a more full description of the dog’s past.
The newly discovered information proved that the puppy was not a nameless stray. Dottie was the dog’s name, and she had a family who had been missing her for five years.
Soon, Ohanian was on the phone with Dottie’s family, informing them that their best friend had returned and was waiting for them.
George Loving, Dottie’s father, had spent so much time missing his dog that he couldn’t believe the news.
“I sobbed a lot about it,” Loving admitted.
Surprisingly, she was back in his arms.
“We were all overjoyed,” Ohanian added.
Dottie’s family wasn’t sure if the dog would recognize them after all this time, but Dottie quickly realized who they were.
“There was never any doubt,” Ohanian remarked. “It was simply stunning.”

It’s still unknown what Dottie’s five-year adventure entailed. Her family may never know what occurred while she was away, but that doesn’t matter anymore; they’re just glad she’s home.
