In Thailand, a rescue worker described how a newborn elephant came around while he was performing CPR on it.
Off-duty Mana Srivate stepped in after the baby calf was injured by a motorcycle and was sobbing in pain on a dark road.
On Saturday, a viral video shows him successfully resuscitating the animal, which is reported to be only a month old, in the eastern province of Chanthaburi. Mana is shown administering the small elephant two-handed compressions as it rests on its side, while colleagues a few metres away assist a bewildered biker. Both suffered minor injuries and are currently recovering, while the elephant was later reunited with its mother.
‘It’s my instinct to save lives, but I was worried the whole time since I can hear the mother and other elephants wailing for the baby,’ Mana, a rescue worker for 26 years, told Reuters.
‘I inferred the location of an elephant heart based on human theories and a video clip I saw online.’
‘I almost cried when the newborn elephant started moving.’
Meanwhile, Anan Cherdsoongnern, 53, was reported to be recovering in hospital after being catapulted through the air and landing 20 feet away.
Despite having dealt with scores of human-caused road traffic accidents, Mana stated the elephant was the only victim he had managed to resuscitate while giving CPR.
After about 10 minutes, the elephant stood up and was moved to another place for treatment before being returned to the scene of the accident in the hope of being reunited with its mother.
Its family arrived after the mother heard her infant crying out, according to Mana.
The animal is seen being tied to a rope in the video, apparently to keep it from getting away.
There was no video of the child being reunited with its family.
‘It was dark when the crash happened,’ claimed another rescuer named Lek. We believe the little elephant got afraid and fled onto the road,’ according to viral press.
‘It was a terrifying experience. I’m relieved the baby survived its injuries and is now with its mother.’
According to Viral Press, the newborn elephant was sobbing loudly following the incident, alerting personnel at the adjacent Forest Fire Control office.
A passing car then called 911, and paramedics arrived on the scene to find the infant losing consciousness, prompting Mana to decide to give it CPR.
