Living on a ranch in Alberta, Canada, Jannet Talbott is no stranger to wildlife. Surrounded by nature, she often observes and cares for the animals that cross her path. However, one day, she noticed something unusual—a squirrel struggling to eat due to a giant overgrown tooth. What followed was an inspiring act of kindness that saved the little creature’s life.
A Shocking Discovery
As Jannet watched a squirrel nibbling at her bird feeder, something caught her attention. A long, curled tooth was protruding from the side of its mouth, making eating nearly impossible.
“I got closer and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s a massive tooth growing out of his mouth,’” Jannet told The Dodo.
Squirrels have four front teeth that never stop growing, but their constant gnawing on nuts and seeds usually keeps them at a manageable length. In this case, however, the growth had spiraled out of control, putting the squirrel’s health at risk.
Mission to Save “Bucky”
Realizing the squirrel needed urgent help, Jannet named him Bucky and set out to catch him. After days of waiting, she finally seized the opportunity when Bucky hopped into her bird feeder.
“I just had to reach in and grab him,” she recalled. “Once I had him in my hand, I just kept telling him, ‘I’m going to help you, Bucky. You’re going to be OK.’”
A DIY Dental Procedure
Upon closer inspection, Jannet saw that Bucky’s condition was worse than she thought—his upper incisors were curling inside his mouth, making it painful to eat.
Worried that a trip to the vet would be too stressful for the tiny creature, Jannet decided to take matters into her own hands. Armed with cuticle trimmers and guidance from YouTube instructional videos, she carefully trimmed the overgrown teeth.
To her relief, Bucky remained calm throughout the procedure. “Squirrels have no feeling in their teeth,” Jannet explained, “so he didn’t feel a thing.”
Bucky’s Big Smile
Once freed from his dental nightmare, Bucky wasted no time enjoying his new chompers.
“I took him outside, and he ran to a branch and started rubbing his little cheeks,” Jannet recalled. “It was like he couldn’t believe those teeth were gone. He just kept rubbing his face.”
The very next day, Bucky returned to the bird feeder—this time with a huge, happy squirrel smile.
A Call for Kindness
Jannet’s inspiring story highlights the importance of compassion for wildlife. By taking a risk and trusting her instincts, she saved Bucky from starvation.
“If we all did a little, it would end up being a lot,” she said, encouraging others to help animals in need.
