When wildlife photographer Victor ech visited Turiec, Slovakia, he intended to create a vlog documenting his stay there. Turiec is a lovely location rich in biodiversity, with at least 300 different bird and animal species, including foxes. ech left his GoPro Hero 9 Black in a clearing in the hopes of capturing footage of the locals. When he went to his camera later, he discovered it had been relocated. He located the cute perpetrators after analyzing the tape.
A fox pup crawling close to the camera activated the camera’s motion detection function about 15 minutes after sundown. It flees in fright at first, then pounces around the camera like a kitten. It rapidly becomes more daring, nosing the camera and knocking it out of position. The other puppies then join in the fun, having their own adventures and batting the camera about. For almost three minutes, the fox cubs interacted with the camera, creating a film that highlights their curious personalities and lively natures in their natural home. “With fox burrows, it’s never dull,” ech explains in the video’s description. “I tried setting my GoPro with motion detection there, and the outcome was quick.”
ech has been shooting wild animals since 2009 and has recently begun experimenting with video. On this trip, he was photographing for the Turiecfoto website, which aims to “bring you closer to the enigmatic lives of these residents, the mountains of Malá and Velká fatra, meadows and waterways.” Two of ech’s key aims in cataloging the region’s animal species are to encourage environmental education and environmental responsibility. “It’s crazy, it’s developing, it’s not steady, it’s always changing,” ech says. That is why he enjoys nature and continues to chronicle Slovakia’s wildlife. Visit Turiecfoto and follow him on Instagram to see more of his work.
