“I don’t know what to tell my kids and nobody wants to tour my garden anymore.”
The internet has been surprised and pleased by a blossoming bubble-bathing cactus, which grew unexpected appendages as a result of one biologist’s botanical endeavors. The artwork in question is a prickly diptych titled “bathing ladies,” which the artist later changed because the bathing cactus couple look to have acquired penises.
“I tried to make a cute bubble bath cactus planter a couple years ago, but it grew a grotesque face, extra appendages, and a penis, and then it grew ruby slippers and the penis blossomed, and now I don’t know what to tell my kids, and nobody wants to tour my garden anymore,” tweeted biologist and cactus enthusiast Colton Finch (@fish squeezer).
The cactus’s “penis” emerged from beneath glass pebble bubbles and grew between the legs of the monkey tail cactus (Hildewintera colademononis). It has since blossomed into an exquisite pinkish-red flower. How appropriate.
Finch’s message deservedly received a lot of attention on Twitter, with over 31,000 likes at the time of writing. Then there was more…
“Well, this enthusiasm was a little unexpected,” Finch wrote. “If you’re interested in more information, I actually have two of these planters that began as the ‘bathing women’ but have since evolved into the gay couple.”
The Mammillaria species M. spinosissima and M. weisingeri are responsible for the couple’s “grotesque” visage (which we really adore).
Some cactuses can be thorny to handle, yet they produce great crafts.
