The unfortunate incident unfolded on Highway 40, just to the west of the Berthoud Pass summit, a renowned mountain pass nestled in the heart of the state. The episode transpired around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, as detailed in a bulletin by the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
Eyewitnesses recounted their futile efforts to revive the 21-year-old skier, who was described as “unconscious and not breathing,” according to official sources.
Despite the swift response of emergency personnel, the young skier was pronounced dead upon their arrival at the scene. Members of the Coroner’s Office were also dispatched to the location.
The skier had been endeavoring to leap across the width of Highway 40 moments before the tragic accident occurred, the sheriff’s office stated.
“Unfortunately, he lacked the necessary speed and distance, subsequently landing on the highway pavement. The victim was wearing a helmet and other protective gear at the time,” the official post lamented.
At the time of reporting, the Grand County Coroner’s Office had refrained from disclosing the identity of the deceased individual and the exact cause of death.
Highway 40 experienced temporary disruptions in both directions throughout Tuesday as investigators meticulously combed the scene and safeguarded the privacy of the victim, according to the official statement.
