A heartbreaking case of animal cruelty has sparked widespread outrage after a woman was caught on camera abandoning her 13-year-old Labrador, Henry, at Orchards Park in Vancouver, Washington. The devastating footage shows Henry’s owner leading him out of her car, removing his collar, and walking him toward a trail—only to sprint back to her vehicle and drive away in a Tesla with Oregon plates.
Viral Video Leads to Police Investigation
The gut-wrenching scene was captured by a neighbor’s surveillance camera, prompting local residents to call the police. Henry, confused and heartbroken, waited at the park for his owner to return. Fortunately, animal rescue organization I Paw’d It Forward stepped in, ensuring Henry was safe while authorities investigated this shocking case of pet abandonment.
The rescue group shared the distressing footage on social media, where it quickly went viral. Outraged animal lovers flooded the post with tips, identifying the woman, her vehicle, and her location. Police swiftly tracked her to her home in Portland, Oregon.
Owner Caught Lying About Henry’s Fate
In an attempt to justify her actions, Henry’s owner claimed she had “run out of options” and couldn’t find a new home for him. However, rescuers were unconvinced by her explanation, especially after learning that she had falsely told family and friends that Henry had died.
“This animal abuser came in after Animal Control posted her door in Portland,” I Paw’d It Forward stated in a scathing Facebook post. “She drove her lovely Tesla to the meeting so she could cry her fake tears and make up her fake story. She did finally admit it, but she really had no choice. I Have ZERO EMPATHY FOR HER.”
Prosecutors Weigh Criminal Charges
Authorities are now considering criminal charges against the woman, as abandoning a pet is classified as animal cruelty under Washington law. According to an animal control officer involved in the case, “Abandonment is considered to be animal cruelty. She believed she had run out of options, but there were resources available.”
If charged and convicted, the woman could face hefty fines and potential jail time. Meanwhile, Henry remains under the care of I Paw’d It Forward, where he is receiving love and attention from rescuers who refuse to let his heartbreaking ordeal define his future.
No Excuse for Animal Abandonment
While financial struggles and unforeseen circumstances can make pet ownership challenging, abandoning an animal is never the answer. Local animal shelters, rescue groups, and pet food pantries offer assistance for struggling owners, including free pet food, veterinary care, and rehoming services.
