Instead of personally returning her, the couple arranged for her to be transported via the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Maru, sensing the painful separation, had no intention of being sent away. As the train stopped at a small station, she managed to pry open the compartment door with her paws and escape. What followed was nothing short of incredible—Maru began her perilous trek back home, covering an astonishing 125 miles on foot.
