Once they enter the river, salmon stop eating entirely and focus all their energy into getting upstream and making babies. By the time they accomplish their mission, they will have depleted all their fat reserves and begin to decompose as they’re still living and breathing. As sad as it looks, any zombie fish is inspiring to see, having successfully avoided thousands of ways to be stopped short of reproducing. The value of salmon in the ecosystem goes far beyond the waters, as even after their life they continue to serve nature by feeding scavengers, enriching the surrounding soils with nutrients, and ultimately promoting a prosperous watershed 🙂
(Note: pacific salmon focused information, Atlantic salmon are special 🖖)
