Experts inspected the dead white whale corpse found on a secluded Victorian beach and determined it was not Australia’s famous Migaloo.
After confirming the whale’s sex, marine biologists from Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) concluded that it was not Migaloo.
The albino corpse that washed up on Mallacoota Beach in eastern Victoria, according to DELWP, is a female, whereas Migaloo is a male.
DELWP regional agency commander Peter Brick said, “Officers have inspected pictures of the dead Humpback Whale near Mallacoota and have determined it is a sub-adult female.”
It’s a man named Migaloo.
“I strongly advise everyone in the neighborhood not to approach the carcass within 300 meters.”
There are probably additional white whales in the vicinity, but this one might not actually be white, according to Vanessa Pirotta, a wildlife expert at Macquarie University.
She said that it may have perished at sea, and over time, the body might have faded and bleached.
We can see barnacles sticking to what looks to be black skin around the throat, she added.
“So, did this whale appear to be typical? Or is that a white whale in reality?”
Many people went to the beach on Sunday to view it.
It’s very fantastic, one local commented.
Staff from DELWP and Parks Victoria will continue to evaluate the corpse this week.
Since the location of the corpse matches Migaloo’s travel history, there were initial concerns that it may be that of the most well-known white whale in the world.
After losing his tracking chip, the albino whale has been AWOL for the past two years.
