A little girl said monsters were in her bedroom. It was 60,000 bees

When young Saylor Class began her nightly ritual of complaining about monsters lurking in her bedroom, her parents, like many others, attributed it to a child’s vivid imagination fueled by recent movie viewings. Little did they know that behind Saylor’s innocent declarations lay a buzzing surprise that would turn their farmhouse in Charlotte, North Carolina, into a real-life scene from a suspenseful thriller.

Ashley Massis Class, Saylor’s mother and a home designer, initially dismissed her daughter’s claims, armed with a bottle of “monster spray” to ease her fears—a playful gesture inspired by the animated movie “Monsters, Inc.” However, as Saylor persisted in her insistence of something dwelling in her closet, the mystery began to unravel.

The first clue surfaced when Ashley noticed clusters of bees swirling around the attic and chimney outside their century-old abode. Connecting the dots, she realized that Saylor might be hearing the faint buzzing from her bedroom ceiling, setting off alarm bells in her mind.

Seeking professional assistance, Ashley contacted a pest control company, only to discover that the supposed monsters were, in fact, a thriving colony of honeybees—a protected species in the United States. What started as a child’s innocuous fear morphed into a bee-infested reality, concealed within the walls of their cherished home.

Enter the “monster hunter,” as Saylor affectionately dubbed the beekeeper tasked with unveiling the source of their unexpected guests. Armed with a thermal camera, the beekeeper delved into the depths of Saylor’s bedroom, revealing a startling truth that illuminated the walls “like Christmas.”

A coin-sized orifice in the attic vent served as the clandestine gateway for the industrious bees, leading to the discovery of a sprawling honeycomb nestled within the confines of the wall. As the wall was breached, a scene straight out of a horror movie unfolded, with thousands of bees pouring forth, their golden honeycomb testament to months of clandestine construction.

A beekeeper removed 55,000 – 65,000 bees from the wall of the home

Over the course of multiple extractions, the beekeeper painstakingly removed between 55,000 and 65,000 bees, along with a staggering 100 pounds of honeycomb—a feat unparalleled in his experience. Each extraction, employing reverse vacuuming techniques, aimed to relocate the bees to a sanctuary, sparing them from harm while alleviating the Class family’s plight.

Yet, the invasion left a trail of destruction in its wake. The honeybees, with their industrious endeavors, unwittingly wreaked havoc on the home’s electrical wiring, causing significant damage. Despite the losses incurred, Ashley found herself at odds with her homeowner’s insurance, which deemed the infestation preventable, leaving the family to shoulder the burden of over $20,000 in damages.

Ashley Massis Class estimates the damage from the honeybees will cost $20,000.

In the end, what began as a child’s innocent fear of monsters metamorphosed into a tale of resilience and unexpected encounters with nature’s wonders. As the Class family embarks on the journey of repairing their home, they do so with a newfound appreciation for the intricate balance between humanity and the natural world—a lesson learned amidst the buzz of 60,000 bees in their midst.
