Freediver Jules Casey captured the beautiful moment a male and female seahorse courted one another under Blairgowrie Pier in Victoria, Australia, and then transferred their eggs from mom to dad.
According to Casey, the couple were unsuccessful on their first two attempts to come together, but managed to make contact and transfer the eggs on their third try.
Casey said she felt extremely lucky to have witnessed such a special moment in nature. And so we are. Just watch her video: The female on the left is transferring her eggs into the males pouch. Watch closely and you can see the male’s belly starting to swell up as he receives her eggs. He will eventually give birth to their babies.
There’s no doubt that seahorses are spectacular. They can change color, move their eyes independently of one another, and even have prehensile tails (like monkeys). And in the entire animal kingdom, seahorses are the only species whose male members give birth to young!
Truly amazing animals!
