A dramatic video capturing the heart-stopping moment when two zookeepers found themselves unexpectedly face-to-face with a silverback gorilla has taken the internet by storm.
Shared on TikTok, the footage showcases the tense situation at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas. The video, recorded on Oct. 20, 2023, portrays the silverback gorilla named Elmo entering the exhibit yard while two employees remained inside. As the gorilla followed the shadow of one of the zookeepers, panic ensued among onlookers, with one person audibly praying for the safety of the employees.
The employees, demonstrating remarkable composure, cautiously maneuvered while awaiting the opportune moment to safely exit the enclosure. Despite the intense situation, there was no physical contact between the keepers and the gorilla, ensuring the safety of all staff and animals involved.
“Thankfully, there was no physical contact between keepers and gorilla, and all staff and animals are safe,” affirmed zoo spokesperson Avery Elander in a statement.
While the video garnered over 25 million views within a short span, questions linger regarding its delayed posting and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Elander, the unexpected encounter arose due to “keeper error,” with zookeepers inadvertently entering the yard unaware that the gorilla was still present. Shedding light on the zoo’s daily routine, Elander explained that keepers routinely shift the gorilla troop between indoor and outdoor habitats for feeding purposes. Despite the mishap, the keepers’ expertise and training enabled them to navigate the situation calmly, ensuring a safe resolution.
Elmo, the 34-year-old silverback, has been a resident of the Fort Worth Zoo for several years, known for his distinct presence. In 2021, he welcomed a new addition to the family with the birth of Gus, a testament to the zoo’s commitment to conservation and animal welfare.
