A vast cloud of gas near the centre of the Milky Way has been found to contain large quantities of alcohol-related molecules, according to scientific observations.

Located in a region known as Sagittarius B2, the cloud is one of the largest known molecular formations in space. Researchers have detected significant amounts of ethanol — the same type of alcohol found in drinks — spread across an enormous area.

Scientists say the scale is difficult to comprehend, with estimates suggesting vast quantities of these molecules distributed across space.

In addition to ethanol, the region also contains compounds such as ethyl formate. On Earth, this chemical is associated with flavours similar to raspberries and rum, which has led to widespread public interest in the discovery.

Experts emphasise that while these molecules share similarities with those found in food and drink, they exist in extremely diffuse conditions in space and are not directly comparable to substances on Earth.

The finding forms part of ongoing research into complex organic molecules in space, helping scientists better understand the chemical composition of the universe and the building blocks of matter.

Growing interest in astronomy and space discoveries is increasing demand for telescopes, online science courses, space documentaries, educational platforms, and advanced optics technology, as more people seek to explore and understand the mysteries of the universe.
