In 2016, amidst the mounting political tension and social fragmentation in the United States, my family made a life-altering decision to move from Connecticut to Switzerland. This decision was not made lightly, especially given the difficult challenges we faced, including finding a supportive educational environment for my neurodivergent son. Our transition, spurred by both personal and socio-political motives, has led to a profound enhancement in our quality of life—a testament to the serene and welcoming nature of Switzerland.

A New Beginning in the Heart of Europe

Upon arriving in Switzerland, the warmth and inclusivity of the local and expatriate communities were immediately palpable. Settling near the picturesque Lake Zurich, we were embraced with open arms. The local expatriates and Swiss natives alike went out of their way to assist us in our adjustment period, from navigating the labyrinth of quaint streets to understanding the nuances of Swiss culture.

The ease of integration was facilitated greatly by Switzerland’s efficient infrastructure. Unlike our previous car-dependent life in suburban Connecticut, Switzerland’s extensive public transportation network and pedestrian-friendly pathways allowed us a newfound mobility. The network of wanderwegs (walking paths) not only connected us physically but also emotionally to the breathtaking Swiss landscape and its community-centric lifestyle.

Education and Inclusion: A Relief for Our Family

One of the most significant improvements in our lives has been the educational opportunities available to my son. The international school we found works diligently with us to ensure he receives the support he needs, starkly contrasting with our strenuous experiences in the US. This supportive educational environment has visibly improved his well-being and academic engagement.

Life in Switzerland: A Daily Discovery

Daily life in Switzerland offers a stark contrast to our past life in the US. The accessibility of nature, coupled with safe, clean, and reliable public transport, has afforded us a stress-free and healthy lifestyle. Our children enjoy a level of independence and safety that was unimaginable in the US, reflecting the communal trust and responsibility deeply ingrained in Swiss culture.

Remaining Abroad Amidst US Turmoil

While the US will always be a part of our identity, the ongoing political strife and societal divides have solidified our decision to stay in Switzerland. On visits back to the US, such as a recent trip to Manhattan with my youngest daughter, the nostalgia for what once was is invariably overshadowed by the realities of contemporary American life. The encounters with visible societal discord serve as poignant reminders of why we chose to leave.

In conclusion, moving to Switzerland has not only provided us with a safe haven from the tumult of the US but has fundamentally transformed our lives. It has offered us tranquility, a supportive community, and an enriching environment that continues to grow with us. As we look toward the future, Switzerland remains our cherished home, promising a stable and fulfilling life for my family.
