In moments when our world seems bleak and inhospitable, the animal kingdom often offers us inspiring displays of compassion and intelligence.
As I’ve mentioned before, and will continue to reiterate, we humans have much to glean from the wisdom of animals.
Take dolphins, for example, such incredibly smart and remarkable creatures! Did you know that their heart rate increases when they see a family member in distress, and that they alert others about potential threats and share news of food findings with their friends?
A beautiful example of dolphins showing care for other animals comes from Flinders Bay in Australia. Five years ago, Whale Watch Western Australia captured a remarkable event when a female humpback whale named Spirit found herself in a perilous situation.
According to Whale Watch Western Australia, a company that offers whale watching tours, the female whale Spirit and her calf were attacked by a male whale.
This unfortunate occurrence is sadly quite common and one of nature’s cruel ways. In a brutal aspect of whale behavior, males sometimes resort to killing calves to make the mother available for mating. And that’s exactly what happened that day five years ago, off the coast of Western Australia.
The mother whale Spirit, of course, understood the severity of the situation and did everything to escape the attack. She did her best to defend her beloved baby – just as any mother would have done. Unfortunately, the odds were against her, especially with five male whales intent on eating her calf.
Their aggressive behavior was captured on camera, and whale enthusiasts on the boat could only watch helplessly. But a few seconds later, something happened that left everyone in awe. An unexpectedly heroic group arrived at the scene and began circling around the mother and her calf.
The dolphins, sensing that something was amiss, formed a barrier around the whales – and saved them from the bloodthirsty males. Some of the dolphins even displayed their teeth as a warning signal to the whales.
The extraordinary situation was captured on film, and Whale Watch WA let the cameras roll – and luckily they did, because this drama was far from over. Suddenly, Spirit swam closer to the boat, almost as if she wanted protection from the humans as well.
Then came a complete turnaround. One of the male whales suddenly chased away the others and then appeared to swim alongside Spirit, protecting her. The whole spectacle became an unforgettable moment, and everyone on the boat received a remarkable display of what can happen in the animal world.
Due to their high emotional intelligence, problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate with one another, dolphins have been called the second smartest animals behind humans. On several occasions, they have saved humans in various situations.
One such incident occurred in Ireland some years ago, when a pod of dolphins helped alert rescue crews to a swimmer lost at sea.
Volunteers from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a charity lifeboat service that operates across the UK, recently saved a man from the sea near Castlegregory in County Kerry, Ireland. They say they received a crucial assist from some very unlikely bystanders.
According to the BBC, the lifeboat crew first spotted a pod of dolphins in the water, which drew their attention to the man struggling in the water.
The bottlenose dolphins surrounded the man, as if intentionally alerting the crew to the man in need of saving. Without them, it’s likely they would never have noticed him. “The casualty was conscious and immediately recovered onto the lifeboat and brought Fenit Harbour to be taken to hospital,” the RNLI said, according to the BBC.
The man had reportedly been missing for 12 hours and was exhausted. It’s easy to imagine how things could have gone tragically wrong if he hadn’t been found just in time. We can’t know for sure what the dolphins were thinking. Maybe it was all a coincidence, or perhaps the dolphins were just curiously observing the man who ended up in their waters.
But given their species’ exceptionally high intelligence, it’s not much of a stretch to imagine they were really trying to alert the crew. Either way, the man is alive thanks to them.
Dolphins are such incredible animals, and this story shows just how intelligent they really are. They definitely saved the day.
