Asher Watkins, a 52-year-old Texas rancher and experienced big game hunter, died after being fatally struck by a Cape buffalo during a hunting safari in South Africa’s Limpopo Province on Sunday, August 3.
The incident was confirmed by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CV Safaris), which stated that Watkins was tracking a buffalo alongside a professional hunter and a tracker when the animal suddenly attacked. According to the company, the buffalo was unwounded at the time of the encounter.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend, Asher Watkins, from the United States,” said Hans Vermaak in a statement. “While on a hunting safari with us in Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by a Cape buffalo.”
The safari operator described the incident as devastating for everyone involved and emphasized that support is being provided to Watkins’ family members both in South Africa and in the United States.

“This is a deeply traumatic event,” Vermaak added. “Our hearts go out to his loved ones, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
A Loss Felt Beyond the Hunting Community
Watkins’ former wife, Courtney, also shared news of his death in a heartfelt social media post, later removed, reflecting on the impact of the loss on their daughter.
“On Sunday, August 3, Asher Watkins died suddenly in a tragic accident involving a Cape buffalo while on a hunting trip in South Africa,” she wrote. “Our hearts are heavy as we navigate the days ahead, especially for his daughter as she grieves her dad.”
She thanked friends and supporters for their prayers and messages during what she described as an overwhelming period of shock and heartbreak.

A close family friend, Jennifer Davis, paid tribute to Watkins’ character, describing him as a man of faith, courage, and adventure. She noted that he was surrounded by family members during the safari and spoke of his deep love for his daughter and his strong presence in the lives of those who knew him.
Professional Life and Background
Beyond his hunting pursuits, Watkins was a managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group, a firm specializing in the purchase and sale of ranch and land properties across Texas and Oklahoma. According to the company, his expertise was shaped by growing up in Dallas and working on his family’s hunting and cattle ranch.
He was widely regarded as knowledgeable in land management and ranch operations, combining professional experience with a lifelong connection to the outdoors.
Final Perspective
Encounters with wild animals, particularly species such as the Cape buffalo — often considered one of Africa’s most dangerous animals — highlight the inherent risks involved in big game hunting, even for experienced individuals. Watkins’ death serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable power of wildlife and the thin line between human control and nature’s force.
