When we think of resilience, few stories match the sheer determination and spirit of Gito, a young orangutan who overcame unimaginable odds. Found abandoned in a cardboard box under the scorching sun, Gito’s story is one of survival, transformation, and hope.

A Harrowing Discovery
In 2015, the International Animal Rescue (IAR) team found Gito in a deplorable condition. His frail body resembled a lifeless, mummified figure. With his mother tragically shot by poachers, Gito had been sold for just $30 before being discarded like garbage. His tiny frame suffered from sarcoptic mange, leaving his skin gray, flaking, and unbearably itchy.
A Race Against Time
The IAR team acted swiftly, driving nine arduous hours to the nearest veterinary clinic. Gito’s survival was a miracle. Intensive treatment began immediately to address his severe skin infection and malnutrition.
Lis Key, communications manager for IAR, highlights the urgency of their work:
“Animals like Gito are victims of rampant deforestation and the palm oil industry. It’s our mission to give them a second chance at life.”
A Remarkable Transformation
Thanks to dedicated care, Gito’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Over months, his skin healed, his vibrant orange fur returned, and his playful personality emerged. By 2016, Gito was unrecognizable from the fragile orangutan found in the box.
Preparing for the Wild
Now thriving at the IAR rehabilitation program, Gito is learning essential survival skills. Alongside other rescued orangutans, he spends his days climbing trees and foraging, essential lessons for his eventual release into the wild.
The Bigger Picture: Saving Orangutans
The story of Gito underscores a grim reality: deforestation for palm oil plantations is pushing orangutans to the brink of extinction. It’s estimated that wild orangutans could vanish within decades if their habitats continue to be destroyed.

A Bright Future for Gito
While Gito still has years of preparation ahead, his future looks promising. With continued care and support, he’ll one day return to the wild, where he belongs. His journey is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact we can make when we stand up for vulnerable animals.
