While Las Vegas glitters under neon lights, Nevada’s heart holds a natural wonder in Gerlach – Fly Geyser. These six-foot-tall geysers, though appearing completely natural, owe their existence to a touch of human error.
Fly Geyser’s vibrant red hues come from algae thriving in the hot spring environment. The geyser itself erupts up to five feet in the air, a mesmerizing display.
Most geysers are rare hot springs that erupt periodically. But Fly Geyser boasts a unique history. In 1916, locals drilled a well seeking irrigation water. Unfortunately, the scorching temperatures deemed it unsuitable. Decades later, in 1964, a geothermal company’s test well shared the same fate.
Improperly sealed wells became the geyser’s origin. Water erupted, and calcium carbonate deposits built up, creating the spectacular Fly Geyser we know today.
