The Breed Behind Viral Image of Dog Comforted By Sheep It Saved from Wolf Attack

The heartwarming picture of a sheep expressing gratitude to a dog that valiantly saved its entire flock from a perilous wolf attack has recently taken the internet by storm. The image captures a moment of profound connection between two unlikely companions, sparking curiosity about the remarkable canine hero in the spotlight. So, what breed of dog possesses such bravery and protective instincts?

Wolves, as the largest species within the canine family, hold the title of apex predators in their natural habitats, spanning Eurasia and North America. Unrivaled in their dominance, they prey on various mammals, with livestock being a prime target. However, nature has its checks and balances, and domestic enemies emerge to challenge these formidable predators.

In a noteworthy incident that unfolded in 2019 in the Caucasus Mountains, a courageous shepherd dog emerged as the unsung hero in a battle against a pack of marauding wolves. Following the dog’s successful defense of the flock, a heartwarming scene unfolded as a sheep approached, expressing gratitude to its savior. This touching moment captured in a photograph has since gone viral, leaving many to wonder about the breed of this exceptional canine.

The breed in question is none other than the mighty Kangal. Originating from Turkey and primarily found in Central Asia, the Kangal is a relatively obscure breed, especially in the United States, where the export of these dogs is restricted to preserve their unique pedigree.

Kangals serve a crucial role as guardians, protecting herds that graze freely in challenging mountainous terrains where wolves and other predators pose constant threats. What sets the Kangal apart is not just its protective instincts but also the deep bond it forms with its flock. Living among the animals it guards, the Kangal becomes a recognized and trusted protector, as evidenced by the poignant scene in the viral photograph.

These working dogs exhibit formidable physical traits, growing up to 85 centimeters (33 inches) in height and weighing an impressive 65 kilograms (143 pounds). Despite their size, Kangals possess a muscular body with exceptional agility and speed, making them highly effective against predators.

One distinguishing feature of Kangals is their record-breaking bite force, averaging at an impressive 743 PSI (pounds per square inch). To put this in perspective, pit bulls have a bite force of 235 PSI, while grizzly bears boast a bite force of 975 PSI.

Adapted to their hostile environment, Kangals have developed unique characteristics over generations, showcasing bravery, strength of will, and an unwavering fighting spirit. Elastic skin on certain parts of their body absorbs the impact of bites, reducing pain and providing a critical advantage in confrontations. The spiked collar, a common sight on these dogs, serves a purpose by protecting their necks from the bites of wolves and other predators during confrontations.

Despite their fierce protective instincts, Kangals exhibit a calm and predictable temperament when off-duty. Affectionate and kind towards trusted humans, they display a natural gentleness, particularly around children. This stems from their inherent understanding of humans as part of their pack, with instincts guiding them to be non-aggressive and non-hostile in domestic settings.

Kangals, when properly trained, showcase remarkable intelligence in discerning when to be calm, when to threaten, and when to confront a predator. However, it’s crucial to note that these dogs are not suitable for everyone. Typically found in the hands of individuals residing in areas with real threats from wolves and bears, Kangals have evolved to fulfill the specific role of livestock protectors.

In the right hands and environment, these strong-willed and independent dogs transform into gentle guardians, prioritizing their ‘flock’ above all else. Nevertheless, prospective owners must be attuned to the specific needs of this unique breed, as Kangals are far from ordinary large dogs. Their purpose-driven nature requires proper exercise and the opportunity to utilize their skills; otherwise, they may succumb to boredom and anxiety, leading to destructive behaviors and excessive barking.

In essence, the Kangal is a breed that thrives in its intended role as a guardian and protector, a testament to its unique characteristics and unwavering loyalty. Understanding and meeting the needs of this extraordinary breed are essential for fostering a harmonious relationship between Kangals and their human companions.
