A drug cartel member’s pet monkey was killed in a bloody shootout in Mexico.
The monkey was discovered wearing a bulletproof vest, khaki hooded jacket, and diaper.
The small spider monkey was discovered lying on the chest of its owner, a young man who is allegedly a member of Mexico’s notorious La Familia Michoaacana criminal group and who also died in the shootout that killed 11 cartel members.
Following a deadly gunfight between authorities and cartel members in the central Mexican town of Texcaltitlan, police discovered the strange and gruesome scene.
Images of the “narco monkey” went viral on social media, with many users assuming they were fake.
The authenticity of the images was later confirmed by local police.
According to the Mexico Daily Post, authorities will look into the possibility that the cartel illegally trafficked the spider monkey, a protected species under Mexican law.
