Argentinosaurus lived on the then-island continent of South America somewhere between 97 and 93.5 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period. It is among the largest known dinosaurs and this is the size of its leg (human for scale).
Imagine a dinosaur so big it dwarfs anything walking the Earth today. That’s Argentinosaurus, a titan among titans, that roamed what was then an island continent of South America during the Late Cretaceous Period. While paleontologists debate its exact size, estimates suggest it could reach up to 100 feet (30 meters) in length and weigh in at a staggering 110 tons. That’s more than the weight of a dozen African elephants!
Even its leg bone was colossal, reaching lengths of 13 feet (4 meters). This puts the size of the Argentinosaurus in perspective. A human standing next to its leg bone would feel dwarfed!
Paleontologists believe Argentinosaurus was a herbivore, munching on leaves and plants from tall trees with its long neck. With its massive size, it likely didn’t have much to fear from predators.
The discovery of Argentinosaurus is a reminder of the incredible creatures that once roamed our planet. Its size and scope are difficult to imagine, but thanks to the tireless work of paleontologists, we can begin to piece together the story of this giant dinosaur.
