- The video depicts the touching reunion of a chimp mother and her baby.
- The video shows Mahale, the mother chimp, picking up and embracing her male baby, Kucheza.
- “It’s one of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen,” said a Sedgwick County Zoo spokesperson.
An emotional video captured the moment a mother chimp was reunited with her baby after being separated for two days due to an emergency C-section at a Kansas zoo.
The video was taken at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita 48 hours after Mahale had her C-section. Due to complications, her baby, Kucheza, had to stay in the hospital for two days, resulting in an emotional reunion between mother and child.
Mahale approaches her baby boy, who is wrapped in a blanket, with caution. When the child extends an arm, Mahale’s maternal instincts kick in, and she quickly scoops up her child and hugs him lovingly to her chest.
Jennica King, the zoo’s communication director, told Fox News that the video is “one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen She recognizes her baby lying there. The baby is completely still. She looks at it as if to ask, ‘What’s going on?’ And when he moves, you can see the relief and love, and it’s just amazing.”
Staff can be heard in the background getting emotional during the tender scene, saying “good job, mama” and cooing.
Sedgwick Zoo said, “Mahale is an exceptional mother, and it’s clear how much she loves her baby.” Mahale’s third child was Kucheza, which means “play” in Swahili.
The zoo stated on their Facebook page that the two have been inseparable since Mahale first picked up her baby and that they are “IN LOVE.”
