A 2018 study conducted by Canisius College has revealed an intriguing finding: women sleep better next to dogs than they do with men—or even cats. The study surveyed 962 women across the United States and found that over half of them shared their beds with a dog. Those who did reported experiencing fewer disturbances, better sleep quality, and a greater sense of comfort and security.
Compared to dogs, human partners and cats were more likely to disrupt sleep patterns. Cats, in particular, were just as disruptive as humans due to their unpredictable nighttime activity and inconsistent routines.

The study also found that women who slept with dogs were more likely to maintain a regular sleep schedule, often going to bed and waking up earlier. This consistency likely played a role in improving overall rest. Beyond structure, dogs were also noted for providing a soothing and protective presence—an emotional benefit that may be especially important for women dealing with anxiety or PTSD. In contrast, cats offered less emotional support and were more active at night.
Experts believe the benefits of sleeping with a dog might go beyond sleep. Sharing a bed with a canine companion could potentially increase oxytocin levels, reduce stress, and even support heart health. However, it’s important to note that these findings are based on self-reported data rather than clinical sleep studies, and individual experiences can vary. Some dogs may snore, take up too much space, or trigger allergies, which could negatively affect sleep.

Still, the research suggests that when it comes to peaceful, restorative rest, dogs might be the ideal bedtime companions for women. So if you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep and have a dog nearby, it might be worth inviting them up onto the bed. Just don’t count on the same tranquility from your cat—or your boyfriend.
