All elderly dogs deserve loving homes to spend their twilight years in, but tragically, a 17-year-old dog was recently abandoned and left tied up in a park with only a heartbreaking note for comfort.
Now, one dedicated rescue group is stepping up to ensure this old dog gets the care he so desperately needs.
Yesterday, Cuse Pit Crew, a nonprofit organization based in Syracuse, New York, responded to a distressing call about an abandoned dog at Schiller Park. Found tied to a picnic table, the elderly dog was accompanied by a handwritten note from his owner, revealing his name as Max and his age as 17.
“I’m a good boy,” the note pleaded. “My owners can’t take care of me no more… Please help me!”
The Cuse Pit Crew team collaborated with Syracuse Police and Dog Control to transport Max to receive essential medical attention. The organization expressed regret that Max’s owner hadn’t sought assistance instead of resorting to abandonment. “Max is not the first, nor will he be the last dog abandoned in a park,” they posted on Facebook. “We believe this could’ve been avoided if more people were aware of our services. We are not a rescue, BUT we will help problem solve with you to the best of our ability.”
“The last thing we want is to see another Max left in a park to fend for himself.”
Max was subsequently taken in by the HumaneCNY animal shelter. In a recent update, they reported that Max’s former owner had been identified and charged with one count of abandonment and one count of cruelty.
As Max’s story gained attention, the shelter received an outpouring of support and donations for his care. In an afternoon update, HumaneCNY shared that Max was receiving “much needed” pain medication and antibiotics. Despite being anemic, dehydrated, and suffering from chronic ear infections that caused permanent damage, Max’s bloodwork was “pretty decent” for his age, and he remained a “lively and curious boy” who enjoys human companionship.
The shelter is also working on placing Max in a loving foster home.
Though it’s heart-wrenching that Max was abandoned, we’re relieved to know he is now in safe hands and receiving the care he deserves. Please share his story and help ensure that every elderly dog finds the loving home they need.
