Free-Range Pork Supplier Admits Animal Cruelty Offence After Undercover Footage Exposes Pig Abuse

A major British pork producer that supplied meat to several of the UK’s largest supermarket chains has admitted animal welfare offences after undercover footage revealed shocking scenes of pigs being violently abused by workers.

The company, Norfolk Free Range, which has supplied free-range pork to supermarkets including Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and Co-op, pleaded guilty to breaching animal welfare laws following an investigation into incidents that occurred at Harford Farm in Norfolk.

The case stems from covert footage recorded over an eight-day period and later featured in the 2022 documentary Pignorant. The footage allegedly showed workers striking pigs with a heavy metal fencing pole known as a hurdle pin. In one incident, a pig appeared to be left for dead after a violent attack.

The disturbing images sparked widespread condemnation and led to an investigation by authorities. Two employees—a man and a woman—were dismissed after the incidents came to light.

Initially, Norfolk Free Range denied multiple charges, including failing to safeguard animal welfare, permitting unlawful killing practices, and allowing workers to inflict unnecessary suffering on animals. However, the company has now admitted a breach of the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing Regulations, legislation designed to prevent avoidable pain, distress and suffering during the slaughter process.

The business was founded by farming entrepreneur Steve Hart, who built the company into one of East Anglia’s largest pig producers and was previously recognised for promoting animal welfare standards within the industry. The company produces thousands of pigs annually and reported millions of pounds in profit in recent years.

The controversy has also drawn attention because Norfolk Free Range was associated with the RSPCA Assured scheme, which promotes higher welfare standards for farm animals. Although the specific farm involved was not certified when the footage was recorded, it later became accredited before its membership was subsequently suspended and later reinstated following inspections and management changes.

Animal rights campaigner Joey Carbstrong, whose documentary helped expose the abuse, welcomed the conviction but argued that justice remains incomplete.

He said the case highlights broader concerns about transparency within the livestock industry and questioned why individual employees were not personally prosecuted for their actions.

Norfolk Free Range said it had been “appallingly let down” by the former employees involved and stressed that the abuse violated company policies and training procedures. The company stated that the workers were dismissed immediately once management became aware of the incidents.

In a statement, the company said there was no evidence of negligence or intent on the part of the business itself and that it accepted legal responsibility because the actions occurred while the individuals were employed by the company.

The case has reignited debate over animal welfare standards within intensive and free-range farming systems alike, with campaigners arguing that independent investigations often reveal practices that remain hidden from public view.

For many consumers, labels such as “free-range” and “high welfare” offer reassurance that animals are treated humanely. Cases like this, however, raise difficult questions about oversight, accountability and transparency within modern food production. As public concern over animal welfare continues to grow, the incident serves as a stark reminder that certification schemes and corporate promises are only as effective as the standards enforced behind closed farm gates.
