In a distressing incident in the quiet town of Winters, California, police responded to a harrowing report of a woman strangling a dog in a parking lot. The ensuing investigation revealed a dire situation, as the woman was found to be living in her car with a total of six dogs. The incident has led to charges of animal cruelty, as well as charges for resisting and obstructing an officer.
On Monday, Nov. 27, officers from the Winters Police Department arrived at the scene following witness reports of a woman physically assaulting and strangling a dog. Upon further inquiry, it was discovered that the woman, identified as 25-year-old Anastasia Mischenkho, had been residing in her black SUV with five additional canines.
The distressing scene unfolded in a parking lot near a Starbucks, where the woman was apprehended for choking one of the dogs. However, the situation escalated as Mischenkho, upon the officers’ arrival, issued threats and suggested she might be armed. Attempting to arrest her prompted the woman to barricade herself in the vehicle along with the dogs.
Calling for backup from the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, the responding officer engaged in a tense negotiation with Mischenkho for over half an hour, urging her to exit the vehicle. Ultimately complying, she actively resisted arrest once outside the SUV.
Subsequently taken into custody, Mischenkho now faces charges of resisting/obstructing an officer and misdemeanor animal cruelty. Officials have indicated that she will undergo evaluation by the jail’s mental health team.
Following the rescue of the six dogs found in the vehicle, law enforcement transferred them to Yolo County Animal Services for urgent veterinary care. The dedicated staff will assess the dogs’ health and administer any necessary medical treatment.
Instances of animal cruelty demand immediate reporting to authorities, and awareness of signs of neglect and abuse can play a crucial role in protecting animals.
