Calm elephant approaches vets’ truck – when they look closely they realize the grave danger

Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife sanctuaries. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is home to elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 300 bird species. Protecting this fragile ecosystem is a dedicated team of conservationists and veterinarians who work tirelessly to ensure its animals survive — especially those targeted by poaching.

So when a report came in about an injured elephant, veterinarians Keith Dutlov and Lisa Marabini from AWARE Trust Zimbabwe responded immediately. They expected a long search through dense wilderness.

What they didn’t expect was an elephant calmly walking straight toward their truck.

An Elephant Asking for Help

The bull elephant, later named Pretty Boy, approached the vehicle without fear or aggression. Within half an hour, he stood close enough for examination — an astonishing act of trust from an animal that had clearly suffered at human hands.

When the vets looked more closely, they realized the situation was far worse than they had imagined.

There was a visible hole in Pretty Boy’s head.

Shot — And Somehow Still Standing

Further examination and X-rays revealed that Pretty Boy had been shot several weeks earlier. A deformed bullet was lodged inside his skull, having narrowly missed killing him.

According to AWARE Trust Zimbabwe, the shot was fired slightly too high for a fatal hit. Instead, the bullet glanced off his skull, causing a depression fracture in the sinus bones before embedding itself nearly two inches from the entry wound.

The injury had become severely infected. Gray pus was leaking from the wound — something the veterinary team described as unlike anything they had seen before.

The elephant had been living with this pain for weeks.

Emergency Treatment in the Wild

Working carefully, the vets removed fragments of shattered bone, thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the wound, and administered strong antibiotics to fight the infection. The X-ray confirmed just how close Pretty Boy had come to death — the bullet was less than an inch away from a lethal impact.

Even more disturbing, signs suggested this was not the first time he had been shot. The team believes Pretty Boy was likely targeted outside the park and wandered into Mana Pools seeking safety.

Despite everything, he remained calm, gentle, and cooperative throughout the procedure — a powerful contrast to the violence inflicted upon him.

Recovery and a Second Chance

After surgery, Pretty Boy awoke and quietly settled beneath a nearby tree, resting peacefully. By the next day, he showed clear signs of improvement.

Back in the protection of the national park, he can now be closely monitored, far from the reach of poachers.

Thanks to the swift action and expertise of AWARE Trust Zimbabwe — the country’s only veterinary conservation trust — Pretty Boy was given something many elephants never receive: a second chance.

Why This Story Matters

This rescue is more than a miracle — it’s a reminder of what’s at stake.

Elephants are intelligent, emotional, and deeply social beings. They remember trauma, recognize kindness, and, as Pretty Boy showed, can even seek help when hope is nearly gone. Their survival depends not only on protected land, but on continued vigilance, conservation funding, and global awareness.

Pretty Boy’s calm approach wasn’t coincidence.
It was trust — and it saved his life.

Elephants are majestic and incredible creatures; this hunting has to stop! Please share this article to help raise awareness.
