“He had gone through a couple of bottles of vodka …”

Earlier this month, an employee at the Australian liquor store BWS noticed something was wrong.

The establishment appeared to have been plundered overnight, with shelving displaced and broken bottles strewn over the floor.

There had been a break-in. But he was no ordinary crook.

The improbable suspect was caught on camera by a store security camera.

It was an echidna, a small, spikey animal native to the area, who had found his way into the empty booze store and made himself at home.

Footage shows the small creature exploring the aisles, examining the booze-filled shelves and refrigerators with no care in the world.

Nobody knows how the echidna got into the store. But he didn’t seem eager to depart.

The echidna was discovered beneath one of the shelving units, exhausted from his night on the town.

“He’d gone through two bottles of vodka and one of chocolate Bailey’s. He was definitely sleeping it off “The employee told ABC News in Australia.

Rescuers from the New South Wales Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) arrived quickly to assist.

“It was determined that the echidna had particularly good taste,” WIRES noted, “because the shelves it had climbed previous to locating its hiding spot was loaded with bottles of champagne, all of which were now laying crushed all over the floor.”

Fortunately, the tiny fellow was not hurt during his adventure, and rescuers were able to catch him.

Rescuers released him in a secure location outdoors.

WIRES observed, “The echidna went away in a straight route – it had definitely not consumed too much champagne over the night.”

The echidna’s alcohol-fueled excursion had come to an end, leaving a shambles in his wake and possibly a hangover.

WIRES stated, “We hope the perpetrator learned its lesson and will not enter and break again.”
