Born on July 22, 1994, Vanilla’s early life was marked by unimaginable restrictions. In 1995, she was relocated to the Wildlife Waystation in California, where she joined a small group of chimpanzees. However, even in this refuge, her enclosure remained roofed, continuing to block her view of the sky.

The Wildlife Waystation shut down in 2019, leaving Vanilla and her family in limbo. Fortunately, Save the Chimps, a sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida, stepped in to provide these chimps with a permanent home. Vanilla and her group were transported cross-country to the sanctuary, where her life changed forever.
Save the Chimps spans 150 acres, offering rescued chimpanzees the freedom to explore lush islands and interact with others in a safe, open environment. When Vanilla arrived, she was greeted with a warm embrace from the alpha male, Dwight—a moment captured in a touching video shared by the sanctuary.
For the first time in her life, Vanilla tilted her head skyward, taking in the vast blue expanse. This simple yet profound moment encapsulated the freedom she had been denied for nearly three decades.
