Gary Kearney, a 20-year-old man from Crumlin, Dublin, England, was sentenced to four months in prison for savagely and mercilessly throwing a rabbit owned by a homeless man named John Byrne off a bridge.
Witnesses told regional media that John Byrne was begging for alms and food on the well-known local O’Connell bridge with Lily, his dog, and Barney, the rabbit, when Kearney came up to him without saying anything, picked up the rabbit without a reason, and threw it in the river. John made the decision to bravely jump over the bridge and chase after his rabbit to save him without giving it any thought because he was in such a state of shock over Kearney’s cruel action. The Crumlin, Dublin Fire Brigade saved them both a short while later.
After saving his rabbit, Byrnes expressed his relief by saying, “I wouldn’t have left him there. I had to rush in to grab him, I had to get him… I caught him beneath the bridge and gave him the living kiss.”
Thousands of people all over the country have been moved by his story, and many have responded by providing food and donations. John Byrne later received the Compassionate Citizen Award from the Dublin, Ireland-based Animal Rights Action Network (Aran), highlighting his bravery and selfless deed by honoring it.
Since then, a Tipperary, Ireland, animal farm owner has offered John Byrnes, who has three dogs now and has been homeless since he was 14, a job.
Bringing this story to a satisfying conclusion.
