Hoodoos are characterized by their distinct composition—a foundation of relatively soft rock topped by a more resilient layer that shields each column from the relentless forces of erosion. Typically emerging within sedimentary and volcanic rock formations, these remarkable geological features possess an unparalleled charm.

They can be found predominantly in dry, arid regions such as deserts, where they stand as sentinels of ancient geological processes. Ranging in size from human height to towering structures surpassing 10 stories, hoodoos astound with their grandeur and unique shapes.

The formations of hoodoos are shaped by the relentless work of erosion, as alternating layers of hard and softer rock are eroded at varying rates. The result is a mesmerizing display of towering columns, each one showcasing a distinct color palette that echoes the mineral deposits found within the different rock types. From earthy reds to vibrant oranges and stunning shades of ochre, the hues adorning hoodoos contribute to their ethereal and almost magical allure.

Interestingly, the term “hoodoo” holds a separate meaning according to Merriam-Webster. It is also associated with “a body of practices of sympathetic magic traditional especially among African Americans in the southern U.S.” Although seemingly unrelated, one can draw a connection between the two meanings—the mystical and awe-inspiring presence of hoodoos is reminiscent of the enchanting rituals and beliefs deeply rooted in various cultures.
