In the world of canine glamour, Boris, the Pyrenean mountain dog, stands tall – literally. Towering over 6ft on his hind legs, this big blond hound is poised to make a significant impression at Crufts, where he is set to compete at the highest level in the ‘open class’ for his breed.
Owned by Susan Reilly of Bracknell, Berkshire, Boris is not your average dog. Described as ‘blond and nutty,’ he is not only an imposing figure but also a natural showman who revels in the spotlight. Miss Reilly, his owner, humorously shared that Boris loves the camera, and it’s no wonder he was christened after none other than the charismatic Boris Johnson.
Preparing Boris for the prestigious Crufts competition is no small feat. After long, muddy walks, this over 6ft tall canine undergoes a pampering routine, including a shower, blow dry, and comb session, all aimed at maintaining the shine and luster of his remarkable coat.
The anticipation is high for Boris’s appearance at Crufts, where he will compete in a field of over 70 Pyrenean mountain dogs. For Miss Reilly, a victory at Crufts holds special significance, as it marks exactly 50 years since a dog of Boris’s breed was crowned best overall at the renowned dog show. In 1970, Bergerie Knur secured the coveted best in show prize, triumphing over 8,397 other canine contenders.
Miss Reilly has even engaged in some playful banter with the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. Having written to him, she received a reply concurring that her four-legged companion is, indeed, more handsome than the Prime Minister himself.
Maintaining Boris’s regal appearance comes at a cost, with an upkeep of around £150 a week. This includes indulgent treats like fillet steak and chicken, contributing to the 7st 8lb pet’s peak physical condition. Miss Reilly admitted that Boris can be a bit spoiled, but his magnificent appearance speaks for itself.
Despite Boris’s international acclaim and numerous awards, the competition at Crufts remains fierce, with a staggering 78 dogs entered in his breed’s event alone. As Saturday approaches, all eyes will be on Boris, the charismatic Pyrenean mountain dog, as he vies for glory and aims to continue the legacy of his illustrious breed in the spotlight of the world’s most famous dog show.
