The viscacha β known for always looking disappointed and in need of a nap.
Me if I was an animal. π©
Thereβs an animal out there that truly gets us. Not a lion, not a dolphin, not a majestic eagle β but a sleepy, grumpy-faced fluffball from South America: the viscacha.

The viscacha (sometimes spelled vizcacha) is a rodent native to South America, and yes, itβs real β not a meme creation. Itβs closely related to the chinchilla and shares the same luxuriously soft fur, big eyes, and long rabbit-like ears. But what makes it stand out is its unforgettable expression β one that looks like itβs stuck somewhere between disappointment, exhaustion, and emotional defeat.

Found in high-altitude, rocky regions like the Andes Mountains, viscachas are well-adapted to harsh environments. They live in large colonies, burrow into rocky crevices for shelter, and feed mostly on grasses, mosses, and shrubs. But hereβs the part that makes everyone fall in love with them: their posture and facial expression.

During the day, youβll often spot them lounging lazily on sun-warmed rocks, looking like theyβve had the worst day of their life β every single day. Their half-closed eyes, slouched backs, and motionless poses give off heavy βI canβt evenβ energy.

Everyone should know that this animal exists. It’s a Viscacha.

Whether theyβre actually sad or just built that way, the viscachaβs look has made it an internet sensation. Photos of them circulate endlessly on social media, usually captioned with things like βme after one Zoom callβ or βme processing the fact that itβs Monday again.β

And honestly, who canβt relate? The viscacha isnβt just an animal β itβs a mood. A spiritual mirror. A reminder that itβs okay to be tired, done, and slightly grumpy about it.

They are my new spirit animal.
So if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed by life, just remember: somewhere out there, a viscacha is sitting on a rock, looking just as tired as you feel. And thatβs weirdly comforting.
