A woman paddleboarding off Mexico’s Central Pacific Coast experienced an extraordinary wildlife encounter when she spotted what first appeared to be a floating log — only to discover a stranded iguana far from shore, struggling against strong ocean currents.
Whitni Nelson was out on the water with her husband and dog when something unusual in the distance caught her attention. Resting on a piece of driftwood was an iguana, floating alarmingly far from land.
“At first, I thought, ‘What is that?’” Nelson said.

As she paddled closer, she realised the reptile was alive — and in a precarious situation. Though iguanas are known to be capable swimmers, Nelson was stunned by how far out the animal had drifted.
According to Nelson, the lizard was nearly a mile from shore, in powerful currents that would have challenged even a strong swimmer. She suspected the iguana may have accidentally drifted out to sea while resting on the log or had climbed aboard after becoming exhausted in the water.

Determined to help, Nelson and her husband first attempted to tow the log back to shore. But when they approached, the frightened reptile leapt into the ocean and began swimming on its own.
It quickly became clear the iguana was running out of strength.
“He kept swimming, but you could see him slowing down,” Nelson said. “He was getting tired.”
Recognising the animal’s distress, Nelson gently manoeuvred her paddleboard closer, careful not to frighten him further. Rather than forcing contact, she allowed the exhausted reptile to decide for itself.
The response was immediate.
The iguana swam directly toward her and climbed aboard her paddleboard, using it as a floating refuge from the relentless water. For the rest of the journey, the reptile alternated between swimming beside Nelson and resting safely on her board as she guided him back toward shore.
Once they reached land, the iguana climbed onto nearby rocks, where he lay quietly recovering in the sun. Nelson even offered him fresh water before leaving him to rest.
For Nelson, the unexpected rescue became an unforgettable reminder of how small acts of compassion can make a profound difference — even for creatures rarely associated with human connection.

What began as a strange sight in the open ocean became a remarkable story of trust, survival and instinct. In his moment of exhaustion, one wild iguana chose to climb aboard a stranger’s paddleboard — and that choice may have saved his life. Sometimes, the most powerful connections are the ones formed without words, in the exact moment help is needed most.
