Photographer Travels 900 Miles to Capture One of the World’s Rarest Snowy Owls

When wildlife photographer Julie Maggert heard reports of an unusually orange-colored snowy owl near Lake Huron, she knew she couldn’t miss the opportunity. What followed was a remarkable journey of patience and determination that took her nearly 900 miles over four days, all for the chance to photograph a bird unlike any she had ever seen.

The rare owl, affectionately nicknamed “Creamsicle” because of its distinctive orange-tinted feathers, had already sparked widespread curiosity among birdwatchers and wildlife experts. For Maggert, however, simply seeing the owl wasn’t enough—she wanted to capture an image that truly reflected its extraordinary beauty.

Her search was far from easy. Over several days, she spent almost 29 hours waiting in the freezing winter landscape, hoping the elusive bird would appear in the right place at the right moment. Although she managed to spot the owl several times, the photographs she envisioned remained just out of reach.

Determined not to give up, Maggert and her husband made one final trip before other commitments forced them to end the search. Their patience was finally rewarded when the owl landed on a utility pole overlooking nearby fields, where snowy owls often hunt mice, voles, and other small prey.

At first, the scene wasn’t ideal. Power lines crowded the background, making it difficult to capture the clean composition she had imagined. Then, moments later, the owl took flight and settled on a nearby pole with an unobstructed backdrop.

It was the opportunity she had been waiting for.

The resulting photographs quickly attracted international attention, with many people fascinated by the owl’s unusual coloration. The images were widely shared online and even featured in The New York Times, prompting discussions among ornithologists about what could have caused the bird’s striking appearance.

Experts say the orange plumage is exceptionally rare. According to Denver Holt, director of the Owl Research Institute, the organization had never documented a similar feather coloration during more than three decades of studying snowy owls.

Several theories have been suggested. Some researchers believe the owl may have come into contact with de-icing fluid near an airport, while others suspect a rare genetic mutation affecting feather pigmentation. Without examining the bird’s feathers, however, the true cause remains unknown.

For Maggert, the mystery only adds to the significance of the photographs. She hopes the story encourages others to appreciate wildlife with patience and respect, reminding aspiring photographers that some of nature’s most unforgettable moments come only after hours—or even days—of quiet observation.

Why Snowy Owls Fascinate Scientists

Snowy owls are among the Arctic’s most iconic birds of prey, perfectly adapted to life in some of the world’s harshest environments. Unusual plumage variations are extremely uncommon, making sightings like “Creamsicle” valuable to researchers studying genetics, feather pigmentation, and environmental influences on wild birds. Wildlife experts also encourage photographers to observe animals from a safe distance, allowing natural behaviors to continue without disturbance while capturing remarkable images responsibly.
