The link between a dog and its owner, long considered as man’s best friend, is genuinely unique. It is a partnership that is difficult to duplicate, despite the highs and lows of life. Dogs provide us unconditional love and devotion, as well as the potential for protection and friendship. It should come as no surprise that this link extends beyond those who live in nice, secure environments with their pets; even homeless individuals recognize the value of having a dog.
By photographing homeless individuals with their favorite dogs, photographer Norah Levien has brilliantly caught this link between dog and owner. Despite the hardships that the homeless face, the idea that they can devote time to caring for and providing for a dog is inspiring.
Despite the conditions they live in, every dog in the images appears to be content to be side by side with their owner. In fact, the dogs appear to be in near-perfect health, which is a great testimonial to the people’s care, despite their predicament.
“It’s intended to feel wonderful when you look at my photos,” Levine said of her photographs. I’m a contented photographer. The issue of homelessness is not a cheerful one, but I wanted to locate the joy that may be found in it.”
Even in the hardest surroundings, it is a joy to watch how much affection is exchanged between dog and owner.
