Witness the breathtaking photograph of a barn owl in full flight, skillfully captured by nature photographer Roy Rimmer. This remarkable image is not just a snapshot but a testament to months of meticulous planning and unwavering dedication.
Rimmer’s journey began over a year ago when he discovered a barn owl nesting in an owl box he had installed years earlier in a sturdy oak tree. During rainy spells, Rimmer would regularly visit, placing small mice or chicks on a nearby post to ensure the owl’s sustenance during its hunting downtime.
It was during these visits that Rimmer observed a unique behavior: as the owl swooped down to claim its meal, it would momentarily hover above the area, presenting an ideal photographic opportunity.
To acclimate the owl to his camera equipment, Rimmer gradually introduced his gear near the feeding post. Initially indifferent and flying away, the owl eventually grew accustomed to the presence of cameras and resumed taking the bait. Rimmer then meticulously set up his camera with dual flashes, fine-tuning the focus and exposure settings (using a fluffy toy as a makeshift model).
After meticulous preparation, Rimmer spent several nights concealed in a makeshift hide, patiently awaiting the owl’s arrival and perch on the post. When the decisive moment arrived, Rimmer triggered the exposure using a remote shutter release. The result? A flawless shot that captured the essence of the owl in its natural element.
Reflecting on his achievement, Rimmer shared, “I consider this image my reward, perhaps for helping sustain the owl through the harsh winter months.”
This photograph not only encapsulates the beauty of wildlife in flight but also serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of photographers like Roy Rimmer, whose patience and expertise enable us to glimpse moments of natural splendor.
