You might want to hold off on being too harsh on these hikers even if at first look you might think they are completely insane for following a mountain lion. When confronted with a mountain lion, the best course of action is to appear rebellious, make noise, appear as loud as you can, and slowly build distance. This entails maintaining eye contact and not scurrying away from or toward the animal. The hikers were correct to maintain their ground and resist the urge to flee during the encounter, even if they probably should have done so when they first saw the animal.
