Residents of Mohe County in China, a region bordering Russia, were treated to an extraordinary celestial display when what appeared to be “three suns” simultaneously graced the sky. This astonishing optical illusion captivated inhabitants for approximately three hours on the morning of Thursday, October 15.
Experts attribute this rare spectacle to a natural phenomenon known as “false suns.” Unlike its infrequent occurrence in China, this atmospheric marvel unfolded from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in Mohe Town, part of the city of Tokyang.
The creation of these ethereal “mock suns” is a complex interplay of atmospheric conditions. Low temperatures, stable air, the presence of clouds, and abundant water vapor combine to form ice crystals at high altitudes. Sunlight refracting through these precisely positioned ice crystals produces the mesmerizing effect.
A social media post by the Daxing Anling Fire Brigade, accompanied by a video of the event, highlighted its significance as one of the longest-lasting appearances of “false suns” in the region in recent memory.
Images and footage captured by Chinese meteorological authorities vividly illustrate the phenomenon. Two radiant spots, dubbed “mock suns,” flanked the actual sun, creating a breathtaking celestial arrangement in the sky above the town of 20,000 residents.
