When it comes to driving, we’re often reminded to stay alert, avoid distractions, and expect the unexpected. But what happens when the unexpected involves a turtle crashing through your car window at high speed? This bizarre and harrowing incident, which occurred in Savannah, Georgia, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of defensive driving and staying vigilant on the road.
The Incident: A Shell-Shocking Moment
On May 12, Latonya Lark and her brother Kevin Grant were driving north on the Harry S Truman Parkway in Savannah, Georgia. What started as a routine errand run turned into a life-threatening situation when a turtle suddenly smashed through their car window.
“I thought it was a brick, and I told my brother, ‘My God, there’s a brick!’” Lark recounted to WSAV-TV. The siblings described hearing a loud boom and feeling shattered glass hit them as the turtle collided with their vehicle.
Grant, a licensed cosmetologist, recalled his immediate reaction: “When the glass broke, the first thing that came to my mind was just to shield myself.”
How Did It Happen?
Lark believes the turtle was hit by another passing car ahead of them, propelling it backward into their windshield. The force of the impact was so intense that the turtle became lodged in the shattered glass. Miraculously, neither Lark nor Grant sustained serious injuries, but the incident left their car severely damaged.
“Even the police officer said if that glass wasn’t as thick as it was and I didn’t slow down the way I did when I saw the object coming, it would have been disastrous,” Lark explained.
The Aftermath: A Tragic Outcome
Officers at the scene managed to remove the turtle from the windshield. While the animal was still alive, it had lost one of its legs. Sadly, Lark later learned that the turtle succumbed to its injuries due to severe blood loss.
A Lesson in Road Safety
This unusual accident underscores the importance of paying attention to the road at all times, especially when driving at high speeds. Lark emphasized, “If people are not paying attention to the road…you know, whoever hit that turtle, they had to have been flying.”
How to Stay Safe on the Road

- Drive Defensively: Anticipate the actions of other drivers and be prepared for unexpected obstacles.
