The beauty of the Western United States comes to life in the work of artist William Haskell. The Santa Fe-based artist uses striking abstract paintings to depict the varied landscapes of this part of the country. Mountains, cacti, and waterways, among other things, help each piece communicate the inherent beauty of the desert, as well as its vastness that makes it feel so wild and free.
Haskell has been drawn to the intense light and shadow that can be seen in the chiseled canyons and among the brittle leaves of desert plants since he was a child. He’s since developed a visual language that can be found in all of his works. “The dust devil or tornado is used as a metaphor for life and represents the constant change that our lives and our world go through,” he explains. “The dust devil has many different meanings in various cultures, but it frequently represents ghosts or spirits.” To me, the cactus has a beautiful and modern shape, and it is a true survivor.”
