Taking a moment to observe animals in their natural habitat can be extremely rewarding, not to mention entertaining. Larissa Hernanlandia was visiting Lake Washington in the Pacific Northwest of the United States when she came across a peaceful scene in the wild: a group of turtles sunning themselves on a floating log. Freshwater turtles are social creatures, and it’s common to see several of them basking on the same log, absorbing the heat and UV-B light in the Sun’s rays that they require to survive.
When Hernanlandia started filming the seemingly simple moment, chaos ensued. Gary, the turtle, attempted to join the others by climbing onto the round log. The log began to roll back and forth in the water as he climbed atop it. This caused some of the other turtles to not only rock back and forth with the swaying branch, but also to lose their balance and fall into the lake. “Gary f**ked it all up,” she says, laughing. Gary then jumps off the log and swims away after tipping more of his friends off. Hernanlandia can be heard saying in the video, “Now Gary got off, and he’s the one who caused all the commotion!”
The 30-second clip is actually a rather ordinary view of nature, but Hernanlandia’s audio commentary adds a level of levity that has resulted in 10.5 million TikTok views. It may be just another day in the life of a cold-blooded creature trying to get some Sun, but Hernanlandia’s exciting narration transforms it into a hilarious ordeal. That is the power of telling creative stories!
This hilarious video shows how one turtle’s attempt to climb atop a log knocked down several other sunbathing turtles.
