Cats are attracted to SpaceX’s self-heating Starlink satellite dishes

Elon Musk has managed to penetrate another another neglected region using Starlink’s satellite internet service, according to Kelli Dugan of Cox Media Group’s National Content Desk.

According to Gizmodo, informal market research shows that the self-heating bowls are highly popular among cats, and social media posts back this up.

“Starlink is fantastic until the kitties discover that the dish emits a little heat on cold days,” Starlink user Aaron Taylor recently tweeted.

The photo that accompanied Taylor’s Dec. 31 tweet showed five cats grouped on a ground-level Starlink dish, with no apparent urgency to leave.

The dish’s Snow Melt Mode, according to Tesmanian, is the most likely reason. According to the Tesla and SpaceX-focused news source, the feature, which was deployed in 2020, provides self-heating capabilities to avoid snow build-up from interfering with the satellite’s transmission.

Taylor quickly pointed out on Twitter that the cats in question had plenty of warm and indoor options for lounging, which they reject in favor of the $499 terminal.

This is what surprises me the most. They have a heated cat house, with water and food, but -25°C and they decide to sit on the Starlink dish. When the sun goes down, they head back to their house.

“That tracks, as any cat owner will attest,” Gizmodo said.

According to the technology news site, SpaceX has deployed around 1,800 low-orbit satellites so far as part of its mission to bring high-speed internet to rural regions via Starlink, with a long-term goal of 42,000 by mid-2027.
