Blood-Soaked California Poachers Arrested After Cops Make Horrifying Discovery

Three suspects covered in blood were arrested at Angeles National Park in Los Angeles County after wildlife officers discovered headless deer carcasses stuffed inside trash bags.

A Tip Leads to a Night Patrol

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) said the arrests followed a tip from a member of the public. Officers conducted targeted night patrols in the area and, during one of those patrols, spotted two vehicles off-roading while shining a spotlight into the forest โ€” a method of hunting the agency describes as both illegal and highly dangerous.

Officers stopped both vehicles and detained three individuals. During the initial contact, they noticed blood on the suspects’ clothing and hands, which prompted a fuller investigation on the spot.

What Officers Found

The search turned up guns and two female deer. One deer had been completely skinned; the other had been cut into four pieces. Both were headless and had been stuffed inside black trash bags.

According to CDFW, the suspects admitted to illegally killing the deer and attempting to hide the evidence. All three were arrested and later released on the agreement that they would appear in court.

Timing Matters โ€” Deer Season Just Opened

The arrests came just as nearly two dozen deer hunting zones across California opened for rifle season on September 19. Legal hunting in the state depends heavily on tag sales, which fund conservation work: CDFW noted that 2025 deer tag sales generated nearly $7 million, money that goes toward big game conservation, habitat protection and restoration, and scientific research. Poaching cases like this one undercut that system directly, since illegally taken animals generate no revenue for the programs that protect the species long-term.

Not an Isolated Case

This wasn’t CDFW’s only recent enforcement action. About two months earlier, the agency arrested lobster poachers at the Santa Monica Pier, where officers found 34 lobsters โ€” including several egg-bearing females โ€” that were later released back into the sea.

How the Public Can Help

CDFW credited the arrest to a tip from a “vigilant member of the public,” underscoring how much the agency relies on citizen reports to catch poachers in remote areas that are difficult to patrol continuously. Anyone who suspects illegal wildlife activity can report it anonymously through CalTIP (Californians Turn In Poachers and Polluters) at 888-334-2258.

Frequently Asked Questions

What charges do the suspects face?
Details on formal charges weren’t specified in CDFW’s announcement, but spotlighting, illegal take of protected species (does), and evidence tampering are common charges in similar California poaching cases.

Why is killing female deer treated as more serious?
Does are critical to sustaining deer populations, since they produce and raise the next generation. California hunting regulations heavily restrict or prohibit taking does in most zones specifically to protect population growth.

How can people report suspected poaching in California?
CDFW’s CalTIP hotline (888-334-2258) allows anonymous reports and can result in rewards for information leading to arrests or convictions.

Is spotlighting always illegal in California?
Yes โ€” using an artificial light to locate or take wildlife at night, commonly called spotlighting, is illegal under California Fish and Game Code except in narrow, specifically permitted circumstances.
