Cutting Creatures from a Single Sheet of Paper Creates a Menagerie

by Stephen King

FacebookTweetPinLinkedIn

Pippa Dyrlaga, a British artist, simply needs a precise knife and some paper to get started. She can cut animals large and tiny from single sheets of paper with just a few tools, from striped tigers to scaley chameleons to fluffy squirrels.

While Dyrlaga’s paper cutouts appear to be effortless, she has been diligently developing her art for more than ten years. Because the artist must painstakingly slice and carve all of the small holes seen in the piece, one artwork can take many hours to finish. She can only achieve the captivating textures that adorn the contours of these animal and plant representations by doing so.

Dyrlaga adds colorful accents to her sculptures, such as painting the feathers on a bird and fur patterns on an anteater, in addition to hand-cutting all of these exquisite works of art. The exquisite complexity of the numerous minute lines on the paper is enhanced as a result.

Dyrlaga’s website sells original artwork, and you can keep up with her current projects by following her on Instagram.
